Who else is interested in the future?

Here’s a short video with another person I met at the Future Summit 09 in Melbourne. This is Alex Jones, who is Chairman of the Deafness Forum of Australia, he’s talking to us in Auslan (Australian Sign Language). Alex raises the really important issue of access for all. After all, what’s a great future if we call can’t share in it?

What he’s saying is:

“Hi, I’m Alex Jones – chairman of the Deafness Forum of Australia. This organisation is the peak body for the deafness sector. We advocate and lobby for the rights of Deaf, hearing impaired, Deafblind people – to improve their lives in Australia. I’m here at the summit to contribute a huge factor on ‘access issues’ across all areas of the megatrends raised in this Summit. Access for all is the reason I’m here. Cheerios.”

  1. I am interested in the future!

    I work with Alex on the board of Deafness Forum of Australia, and we are always working hard to try and get equal access for deaf people in all areas.

    I think disability is one of the last bastions of inequality.

    Racial and sex discrimination have improved so much in the past few decades, but disability discrimination still lags behind.

    It is people like Alex that will challenge these notions, and hopefully change the way the world perceives people like us who are deaf!

    Thanks so much for capturing this voxpop on the day. For those of you not at the event, you missed out on meeting Alex, who is certainly one of the most positive and endearing people I have had the privilege to meet.

    I know you made this comment to me Kate, but it is so true. It is very interesting how most of our conferences (and most conferences in general, really) are so hyped for the auditory senses. Alex’s presence at Future Summit helped remind me that the best conferences are those that stimulate ALL the senses…regardless of whether you have a ‘disability’ or not.
