Ada is an amazing role model for women in science and technology - [more here](http://inventors.about.com/od/lstartinventors/p/Ada%5FLovelace.htm?ref=katecarruthers.com). I'm always surprised to hear from people who have studied computing or programming but who don't know about Ada.

Also worth looking at - to put Ada's achievements in context - is [Women's Status in Mid 19th-Century England](http://www.hastingspress.co.uk/history/19/overview.htm?ref=katecarruthers.com) by Helena Wojtczak. Women have come a long way since then but we still need to be watchful for our rights to education and participation.
