# Inspiring millennials

[Millennials](http://mashable.com/category/millennials/?ref=katecarruthers.com) or [Generation Y](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation%5FY?ref=katecarruthers.com) have been getting a hard time in the media for a while now. They are alleged to be [entitled](http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB122455219391652725?ref=katecarruthers.com), they [don't buy cars](http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2012/09/the-cheapest-generation/309060/?ref=katecarruthers.com) (which will apparently destroy the economy), and they are said to be [extraordinarily optimistic](http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/30/magazine/30fob-wwln-t.html?pagewanted=all&%5Fr=0&ref=katecarruthers.com) in spite of the economic circumstances into which the emerge as adults.

### Enactus UNSW

But that is not my experience of millennials. It was inspiring to meet the [young people](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youth?ref=katecarruthers.com) at [Enactus UNSW](http://www.enactusunsw.org/?ref=katecarruthers.com) earlier in the week at their pitching competition.

There I found committed and engaged people who are working to make the world a better place. They were pitching projects to help with youth mental health issues, recycle computers and get them to community groups, provide business support to [social enterprises](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social%5Fenterprise?ref=katecarruthers.com).

The diversity of ideas was remarkable, the passion and enthusiasm encouraging. The university students who participate in these projects are getting valuable experience for their post university lives. And they are also gaining valuable experience in working to create [sustainable business](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable%5Fbusiness?ref=katecarruthers.com) solutions. It is what I like to call a win-win.
